The KidWind Challenge, a turbine design competition that will take place at the American Wind Energy Association WINDPOWER Conference & Exhibition in Chicago in May, is preparing future leaders for engineering roles in the wind industry, writes the editorial board of The Roanoke Times in Virginia. Three teams from Bath County and another from Rockbridge County will participate in the event.

Analysis: Municipal utility helped Texas town hit 100% renewables goal
One reason Georgetown, Texas, was able to achieve its 100% renewable energy goal within just three years is because it has its own municipal utility authority, writes Tina Casey. Cost declines will drive offshore wind boom, says Moody's
Offshore wind is expected to take off in the US in the years to come due to declining costs and a stable regulatory environment, according to Moody's Investors Service. The report said the Northeast, including New York, New Jersey and Massachusetts, would likely see large investments in the industry.

Orsted and Eversource have proposed a 200-megawatt offshore wind farm in Connecticut that will compete in the state's first offshore wind leasing round. The duo said power from their Constitution Wind site would come at the "lowest possible cost."

Formosa 1 Phase 2 to feature Siemens Gamesa machines
Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy has won a contract to supply the second phase of the Formosa 1 offshore wind farm near Taiwan with turbines for a total capacity of 120 megawatts, said the company. The phase is expected to feature 20 SWT 6-MW 154 machines.

Aerones develops large drone to clean turbines, industrial sites
Aerones has developed a new large drone that can de-ice and perform other cleaning tasks for wind turbines and other industrial equipment at a lower cost than the helicopters many energy plants use, according to the company. Ice accumulation makes turbine blades less aerodynamic and reduces their potential output.

Amazon exec: Sustainability is a priority in all aspects

Canadian fund to acquire NextEra's wind, solar portfolio in Ontario
NextEra Energy Partners is in the process of selling its wind and solar assets in Ontario, Canada, to the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board, according to the companies. The portfolio consists of six wind and solar projects and has a total capacity of roughly 396 megawatts.

The Las Cruces City Council in New Mexico unanimously approved a new 100% by 2050 renewable energy goal on Monday. The resolution also calls for the city to source 25% of its electricity from renewables by 2022.
