AWEA, others urge House, Senate to maintain Energy Dept. program spending
The American Wind Energy Association and other industry groups have written a letter to the leadership of the House and Senate Appropriations Committees calling for the ongoing funding of several Energy Department programs, including the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy and the Advanced Research Programs Agency -- Energy. "We believe that such cuts in FY 2018 or FY 2019 would seriously jeopardize America's leadership in cutting-edge research on clean energy technologies," they wrote.

Opinion: "All of the above" energy approach is working in Western US
An "all of the above" approach to energy is working in the Western US, and over the past several years has resulted in valuable real-life economic benefits for both states and their rural communities, write Sarah Hunt, director of the Center for Innovation and Technology at American Legislative Exchange Council, and Bob Beauprez, chairman of The Western Way. "Washington would be smart to take a close look at the 'all of the above' energy model thriving in the West in settling on a smart and sustainable national energy policy," they write.

"Wind has grown very substantially over the last decade," he said, adding that wind on SPP's grid has increased from 500 megawatts in 2008 to more than 17,000 MW in 2018.

Arkansas should support the Wind Catcher Energy Connection and other renewable energy projects that can deliver low-cost electricity to residents and businesses, writes Jim von Gremp, former state representative and former chairman of the Arkansas Public Service Commission. "[Southwestern Electric Power's] Wind Catcher project is an exceptional opportunity to lower SWEPCO customers' electric bills, help develop a cleaner environment and add diversity to the viable renewable energy sources serving Arkansas," he writes.

Observer applauds Mich. utility for emissions reductions effort
Michigan utility Consumers Energy's plan curb its carbon emissions and divest from coal by 2040 by increasing renewables and other measures is good news, writes Timothy Ruckriegel of Greensboro, N.C. "Not only is the cost for renewable energy going down, but logically it does not make sense to continue investing in fossil fuels when they are limited resources," he writes.

Maine should keep "expedited permitting" for wind, say advocates
Officials from Apex Clean Energy and other wind and business groups urged the administration of Maine Gov. Paul LePage to maintain the state's "expedited permitting" process for new wind projects during a hearing Friday. "It would introduce a fair amount of uncertainty to the project and we don't have a lot of confidence that we could complete the project with the adoption of the legislation," said Apex Senior Development Manager Paul Williamson.
