Analysis: Utilities embrace clean energy because it's good for business
DTE Energy, Duke Energy and other utilities are embracing clean energy because it's good for business, despite the Trump administration's agenda, write Sheryl Carter and Elisheva Mittelman of the Natural Resources Defense Council's Climate & Clean Air Program. Wind and solar are great investments because they continue to get cheaper and have the added benefit of curbing carbon pollution, they argue.

Opinion: Feds should rally behind clean energy manufacturing
Rolling back the Clean Power Plan and other aspects of the federal government's agenda are destabilizing the US clean energy market and preventing the nation from taking advantage of the exploding global market for clean energy manufacturing, writes Mike Carr, executive director of New Energy America. He argues that the government's policies are driving clean energy manufacturing jobs overseas at a time when utilities should be replacing coal-burning power plants with low-cost wind and solar.

Land-based wind could be the cheapest energy source by 2050, says BP
Land-based wind is on track to become the most economical energy source by 2050, especially since costs have already declined 23% since 2010, according to BP. The report said wind and solar are both competitive with fossil fuels and that wind prices will continue to drop as turbines get taller and other advances occur.

Opinion: Md. ratepayers deserve the economic benefits of clean energy
Maryland ratepayers are missing out on the economic advantages of clean energy because utilities use a short-term model for power purchase agreements, making it difficult to reach deals with renewables, write state Sen. Brian Feldman and state Rep. Luke Clippinger. Their bill would change that by carving out 2% to 3% of the state's electricity needs for long-term, fixed price clean energy contracts, they write.

Xcel Energy has secured approval from the Colorado Public Utilities Commission to include its Clean Energy Plan portfolio in a process that could result in the retirement of two coal plants and a request for proposals to add up to 1 gigawatt of wind energy in the state. The utility will share the plan in a 120-day report due April 27.
