Renewables are integral to energy dominance, says Energy Dept. official
Renewables like wind and solar play an important role in the US energy landscape, and like fossil fuels, are integral to US energy dominance, Undersecretary of Energy Mark Menezes said Wednesday. "Beyond any particular fuel source, the one inexhaustible source of energy is American innovation," he said.

Opinion: Atlantic Coast cities should prioritize preparing for offshore wind
Public and private-sector planners along the Atlantic Coast should be investing time and energy in preparing for offshore wind because such efforts will bring the industry to fruition faster and more efficiently, writes New Bedford, Mass., Mayor Jon Mitchell. "New Bedford is doing everything it can to position itself as an ideal location for the industry to build its future," he writes, citing the city's marine terminal, workforce development efforts and focus on land-use planning.

Drones allow wind and solar project operators to perform maintenance and operations functions quickly and more affordably than ever before, driving down the overall cost of renewables and allowing them to become more competitive with fossil fuels, writes Katie Fehrenbacher. Michigan-based SkySpecs, for example, can inspect a turbine in as little as 15 minutes, while Aerones' drones use special algorithms to reliably clean and de-ice turbines.
