Many communities in New York and across the US are benefiting from wind development and the revenue paid to local landowners, townships and school districts, writes Neely Kelley, senior organizer for Mothers Out Front. "Wind projects can bring new local revenue to fix roads, build schools and fund first responders," she writes, calling on community leaders to support the energy source.

Analysis: Olympics may support South Korean clean-energy shift
South Korea has set a goal to source 20% of its total electricity needs from renewables by 2030 -- an initiative that may be bolstered even more by the presence of the 2018 Olympic Winter Games, writes Elaine Ramirez. Pyeongchang already has 92 wind turbines operational and supplying power to utility Korea Electric Power.

Opinion: Offshore wind farms support grid stability, emissions reductions
Offshore wind farms such as Vineyard Wind's 800-megawatt project slated for the Massachusetts coast will help grid operators maintain grid stability and avoid huge greenhouse-gas emissions releases during extreme weather events, writes Mike Jacobs, chairman of the Vineyard Power Cooperative. He argues that if Vineyard's project had been operational during the Jan. 4 "bomb cyclone" weather event that swept the East Coast, ISO New England could have maintained grid stability without burning as much oil.

Atlantic Wind updates Pa. wind-farm proposal
Atlantic Wind has introduced a modified design for a wind farm proposed in Carbon County, Pa., reducing the total number of turbines from 37 to 28, according to the company. "We're constantly evaluating ways to make every wind farm have as small a footprint as possible, and as a result, we submitted an application for a Penn Forest wind farm that takes advantage of newer turbine technology to shrink the number of turbines," said spokesman Craig Poff.

US Wind asks Md. city councilors to reconsider offshore-wind resolution
A resolution passed by city councilors in Ocean City, Md., last week requiring offshore wind farms to be built at least 26 miles away from shore is unnecessary and would interfere with US Wind's proposed 268-megawatt Maryland project, the company said. US Wind President Riccardo Toto has requested a meeting with the City Council "to work collaboratively" to resolve the issue.

Wood uses PPT tools to check turbine performance at Texas site
Consultancy Wood Group recently installed power-performance monitoring systems on six Vestas V100 turbines at TerraForm Power's 200-megawatt, 100-turbine South Plains 1 project in Texas to assess their performance and identify areas for improvement, according to the companies. "By using PPT, we can compare the actual power curve for a wind turbine to the warranted power curve provided by the wind turbine manufacturer to identify and correct any sources of underperformance," said Bob MacDonald, CEO of Specialist Technical Solutions at Wood.

Mass. officials name alternative to Northern Pass project
Massachusetts officials and utilities have picked Avangrid's 140-mile New England Clean Energy Connection transmission project in Maine as the backup plan for the state's request for renewable energy proposals. Eversource Energy has until March 27 to persuade New Hampshire regulators to reverse a Feb. 1 decision rejecting its Northern Pass project.
