Analysis: Mo. transmission issues are causing regional bottleneck
Red tape and logistical issues in Missouri are preventing developers from building out much-needed transmission lines that would carry wind energy throughout the western Great Plains, such as Clean Line Energy Partners' stalled Grain Belt Express line, writes Bryce Gray. Clean Line Vice President Mark Lawlor said, "It's a chokepoint on the entire system," adding that the challenges faced by his firm are unique to Missouri.

Investors are increasingly keen on wind, solar deals, say analysts
Clean energy projects like wind and solar farms will generate stable revenue for decades to come, making them an increasingly attractive buy for institutional investors, say analysts. "Clean-energy infrastructure funds have finally arrived," said Bloomberg New Energy Finance Analyst Nathan Serota, adding that investors are increasingly on a hunt for clean energy assets.

A developer has proposed a wind farm that, if approved, would feature up to 100 turbines and straddle the Iowa-Minnesota line. "It's anticipated that this wind farm, the Freeborn Wind Farm, would bring in $3.5 to $4 million annually into the local economy," said Mariah Lynne, a project consultant.

CEO: Vestas' geared turbine focus is working
Vestas' strategy of focusing exclusively on gearbox turbines has been successful and is one the company will continue to embrace, said CEO Anders Runevad. The company is one of a few turbine manufacturers to only offer gearbox machines, while many competitors focus solely on direct-drive technology or a combination of the two turbine styles.

Ill. wind boom may max out transmission, says expert
Illinois is on the brink of adding two new wind farms after nearly 10 years of stagnation, but the new boom could make it difficult for other projects to get off the ground moving forward, said David Loomis, director of the Center for Renewable Energy at Illinois State University. "If everything gets built, that'll probably use up the transmission capacity we have available," he said.

Opinion: Mass. should opt for Granite State project
Massachusetts' challenges regarding the Northern Pass project that would carry hydroelectricity from Canada into the US are a happy surprise because it opens the door for the Granite State Power Link to be reconsidered, writes Dave Snedeker, executive director of the Northeastern Vermont Development Association. "The project would provide an economic boost of hundreds of millions of dollars to Vermont and strengthen local tax bases," he writes.
