Opinion: Renewables are smart investments for Minn. utilities
The cost of wind power has declined 66% over the past seven years, making it a very attractive and logical energy source for utilities in the Midwest and, specifically, Minnesota, write energy consultant Will Kaul and Beth Soholt, executive director of Wind on the Wires. "[W]e should have the common sense to understand that these energy resources have a triple bottom line -- they are good for business, customers and the environment," they write.

Tax bill could hinder S.D. wind supply chain, say industry leaders
A proposal to repeal the wind energy Production Tax Credit phase-out has already had a detrimental effect on South Dakota's wind industry, starting with the closure of Molded Fiber Glass' plant in Aberdeen and the 409 jobs that went with it, writes Patrick Anderson. South Dakota Renewable Energy Association analyst Steve Wegman said even though the proposal was cut from the final tax bill, it still threatened nearly $1.5 billion worth of projects in the state.

Invenergy is seeking a county permit from McLean County, Ill., allowing for the construction of a new wind farm that would feature about 100 turbines for a capacity of 250 megawatts, said the company. "The project location was selected due to the area's strong wind resource, land use, and proximity to existing transmission infrastructure," said Invenergy in its application.
