AWEA online map shows the evolution of US wind
A new online map from the American Wind Energy Association shows the location of every wind farm in the country, more than 500 factories that manufacture wind-related components and how the industry has grown over time. "Wind power has become a vital part of the US economy, drawing billions of dollars in capital investment to rural communities each year and supporting over 100,000 US jobs across all 50 states," said AWEA Deputy Director of Industry Data and Analysis John Hensley.

MidAmerican Energy's Prairie Wind Farm project in Oskaloosa, Iowa, is impressive and will help the state move toward sourcing 40% of its total electricity needs from wind, said Rep. Dave Loebsack, D-Iowa, after touring the facility on Thursday. "They're going to have 85 or so of these turbines up by the end of the year and it's really going to add a lot of energy; good, clean renewable energy for the state of Iowa," he said.

Opinion: Wind is a safe, highly beneficial energy source for S.D. county
Hughes County, S.D., can reap the benefits of wind development without having to compromise on safety, the environment or aesthetics, contrary to an editorial in the Capital Journal, write Daniel and Lana Carroll. They argue that wind farms must meet a variety of criteria addressing these issues, and that done right, the industry creates thousands of jobs and makes major contributions to the local economy.

Analysis: Falling wind, solar costs to shake up utility investing
Falling wind and solar energy costs are expected to disrupt the realm of utility investing, writes James Saft. He argues that on one hand, utilities will have access to low-carbon, cost-competitive electricity from renewables, but, on the other, firms that have spent a lot on fossil fuel-burning plants stand to lose on their investments.

More wind farms are coming to S.D., says PUC head
South Dakota expects to see more proposals for wind farms, despite Lincoln County's decision last month to increase setback distances for turbines that many argue will deter investment decisions, said state Public Utilities Commission Chairwoman Kristie Fiegen. She said the state has given counties more control over wind development and that new wind farms are underway in the eastern and northern sections of South Dakota.
