Wind will add stability to Appalachian Power's portfolio, says exec
Appalachian Power can help stabilize its energy mix and avoid risks associated with volatile energy markets by adding more installed wind capacity to its portfolio, according to Director of Regulatory Services for West Virginia John Scalzo. He added that the utility would benefit from buying a pair of wind farms in Ohio and West Virginia even without the Clean Power Plan or taxes on carbon emissions.

Iowa researchers study power grid, wind integration
Researchers from Iowa State University are examining how three electrical grids in the US can work together to carry wind from Iowa's near 4,000 turbines to the rest of the Midwest. "In Iowa, about 35% of our electricity is renewable energy," said ISU professor James McCalley, adding, "If we want the rest of the country to be at 35% renewable energy, this is what you want to do."

Non-Iowan authors made inaccurate claims about wind, says observer
The authors of a recent column from the Heartland Institute in Illinois made many false claims about Iowa's wind industry, for example that the energy source is only important to wind supporters and liberals, writes Jon Kallen, a managing partner with Jennings Kallen Advisors in Iowa. "Iowans are realizing the benefits of the state's early investment through lower electricity rates and increased economic development opportunities throughout Iowa," he writes.

An exclusive event is headed to the Northwest
The northwestern region of the US is thriving. Utility resource planning and replacement power (from retiring power plants) is setting the region up for significant wind energy growth, on top of growing renewable portfolio standard demand from Oregon and Washington. If you're invested in or have ties to the Northwest, you won't want to miss the AWEA Northwest Regional Wind Energy Conference this month in Seattle. Read more.
