Renewables like wind and solar don't threaten electric grid reliability in the US, according to the draft report from the Energy Department. "The power system is more reliable today due to better planning, market discipline, and better operating rules and standards," it said.

Analysis: Partisan divide threatens Wyo. wind growth
Wyoming is home to some of the best wind resources in the country, making it attractive to major projects like a proposed 1,000-turbine wind farm from billionaire Philip Anschutz. An unfriendly political climate, however, may hinder the industry's development, writes Jeremy Deaton, citing a failed bill that would have stopped state utilities from selling wind output, plus the state's tax on wind generation, which many firms see as anti-wind.

Apex hosts informational session in Neb.
Apex Clean Energy met with landowners in Nuckolls County, Neb., last week to discuss its Prairie Spirit Wind project, which could feature up to 130 turbines. Project Developer Dylan Ikkala said Apex is in the early stages of developing the project, but has so far been met with strong support from residents in the Lawrence area.

Lengthen turbine blades to increase output, says wind duo
New tip designs that make turbine blades longer bolster output by up to 6%, according to the findings of LM Wind Power and Energy Research Center of the Netherlands. "We've already included this knowledge as part of new blade developments and look forward to bringing even better performing blades to the market," said InnoTip Project Manager Jordy van Kalken.

Wyo. lacks the workforce to sustain wind growth, says observer
Wyoming's installed wind capacity could double if all the projects currently on the table come to fruition, but the state lacks the workforce to support that level of growth, writes Heather Richards. Local experts are divided on where that workforce will come from, with some saying the market will naturally create it, as it did for the oil and gas industry, and others arguing that it won't happen at all and the projects will fail, she writes.

Envision proposes global platform for energy, wind included
Chinese wind firm Envision Energy has proposed creating a new global "ecosystem" for energy where every aspect of the industry -- including wind and solar projects, power plants, utilities, consumers, etc. -- can interact via a single, digital platform. CEO Lei Zhang added that his firm is expected to receive a record-breaking number of wind orders in 2017 and even more the following year.

Colo. governor defends decision to join US Climate Alliance
Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper said his decision to have his state join the US Climate Alliance wasn't a partisan decision, saying that the US Climate Alliance is a voluntary program that will help Colorado put its energy future in the hands of its residents. Hickenlooper added that 90% of residents support using more clean, renewable energy.

An exclusive event is headed to the Northwest
The northwestern region of the US is thriving. Utility resource planning and replacement power (from retiring power plants) is setting the region up for significant wind energy growth, on top of growing renewable portfolio standard demand from Oregon and Washington. If you're invested in or have ties to the Northwest, you won't want to miss the AWEA Northwest Regional Wind Energy Conference this month in Seattle. Read more.
