Kiernan: Wind energy is vital to rural economies
Wind energy is widely supported among Americans, and it provides a boost to rural American economies, writes American Wind Energy Association CEO Tom Kiernan. "Farmers and ranchers get $245 million a year in lease payments for hosting turbines, and wind has attracted more than $140 billion of private investment in the last decade," he writes.

Plans approved for first commercial wind farm in Va.
Apex Clean Energy will build 25 turbines atop a ridgeline in Botetourt County, Va., after state environmental regulators gave their approval for a commercial wind farm. The Virginia Department of Environmental Quality ruled that the turbines would not pose an undue risk to wildlife -- with one exception, and wants Apex Clean Energy to turn the turbines off at night during the warmer parts of the year when bats are most active.

Storms fuel Scotland's wind turbines
Strong winds from a storm in Scotland fueled a 43% increase in wind power in February compared to one year ago. Wind turbines sent enough energy to National Grid to supply more than half of Scotland's entire electricity needs for February.

The Energy Information Administration consistently underestimates in its annual outlooks how much the wind energy industry will grow in terms of capacity, writes Dan Cohan of Rice University. The faulty predictions can lead to poor decisions by public policymakers and those who invest in the industry, he writes.

Green funds see boost in investment
Investors are putting their money toward environmentally-conscious funds, in what analysts say is a response to the election of President Donald Trump. "If clients see the federal government withdrawing from a space they think is important, they may actually be more active in wanting to enforce their views through the dollars allocated," said Standish Mellon Asset Management Chief Economist Vincent Reinhart.

Editorial: N.D. bill threatens wind projects
North Dakota might lose out on a number of economically beneficial wind projects if the state passes a bill tightening regulations over the industry, the editorial board of the Jamestown Sun writes. The bill, which was passed by the state Senate last month, should be defeated, as the royalties and taxes paid by the wind energy industry are vital to the state, the board writes.
