EIA: Wind accounted for almost 25% all generation in Maine last Dec.

Wind farms in Maine accounted for almost 25% of the state's total energy production in December, according to the Energy Information Administration. The report attributed the increase in generation to the launch of two new wind farms, the 56-turbine Bingham Wind project and an 18-turbine project in Hancock.

R.I. governor proposes 1,000 MW by 2020 renewable energy goal
Rhode Island Gov. Gina Raimondo on Wednesday unveiled a plan calling for the state to add about 900 megawatts of installed renewable energy capacity by 2020. "Every step we take toward a clean energy future is a step toward a stronger, more sustainable environment and economy," said Raimondo, adding that clean energy generation should continue to grow as new technology drives down pricing.

Juhl preparing to launch first US wind, solar hybrid, says founder
Juhl Energy is expected to launch the first US hybrid wind and solar project, the Red Lake Falls Project, this year, according to founder, board chairman and Principal Executive Officer Dan Juhl. He said the concept has the potential to dramatically cut project costs because both the wind and solar arms can use the same converter.

Siemens wins contract to build 60-MW project in Indonesia
Equis and Indonesian utility PT PLN have contracted Siemens to build and operate the 60-MW, 20-turbine Tolo project in South Sulawesi, Indonesia, according to the companies. "Indonesia is set for a period of rapid, sustained growth in energy demand, and the Indonesian government has set sensible targets for renewable energy to satisfy a large share of this demand," said Equis CEO and partner David Russell.

Vestas eyes cost reductions with cable-anchored tower
Vestas has introduced a tower design that uses multi-strand steel cables to keep the unit in place. Vestas said its "cable-stayed tower" uses less material and is easier to transport, which could potentially cut costs associated with manufacturing land-based turbines.

Wind Coalition criticizes anti-wind op-eds in Okla.
The Wind Coalition has criticized anti-wind lobbyists in Oklahoma for supporting "misleading op-eds," like the one recently written by former Gov. Frank Keating. Wind Coalition President Jeffrey Clark said the Oklahoma Independent Petroleum Association's attacks on wind are flawed and that natural gas and wind should work together to make Oklahoma a national leader in electrical generation.

Natural Power appoints new North American head
Christine Sutter has been named Natural Power's new head of environment in North America, responsible for all permitting related to the company's land-based wind, offshore wind and other renewable energy projects, said the company.
