EIA: Wind, solar accounted for 60% of new US generating capacity in 2016
Wind and solar energy accounted for 60% of the 24,000 megawatts of new electrical generation capacity added in the US last year, according to the Energy Information Administration. The report said 72% of the nation's total installed wind capacity is located in the Midwest and the South.

MidAmerican plans 2 Iowa wind farms under Wind XI scheme
MidAmerican Energy has unveiled plans to build a pair of wind farms in Iowa as part of its Wind XI project, which could have a total installed capacity of up to 2,000 megawatts, according to the company. The projects include the 85-turbine, 170-MW Beaver Creek project and the 84-turbine, 168-MW Prairie wind farm, it said.

BNEF: Global offshore wind spending climbed 40% to $29.9B in 2016

Global spending on offshore wind development increased 40% to $29.9 billion in 2016, according to Bloomberg New Energy Finance. "The offshore wind record last year shows that this technology has made huge strides in terms of cost-effectiveness, and in proving its reliability and performance," said CEO Jon Moore.

BayWa acquires 25-MW project in Mont.
National Renewable Solutions and Montana Wind Resources have sold the 25-megawatt Greycliff project in Montana to BayWa for an undisclosed price, according to the companies. BayWa said it plans to break ground on the project as soon as possible.

Nordex to supply Australian project with 22 turbines
Nordex has agreed to supply Acciona Energia with 22 of its AW125/3000 turbines for the first 66-megawatt phase of the Mount Gellibrand wind farm in Australia, the company said. The project is expected to begin operations in 2018.

Dong Energy wins service deal with 270-MW offshore wind farm in UK
Dong Energy has secured a long-term service and maintenance deal with the 270-megawatt Lincs offshore wind farm off the coast of England, said the company. "It will be the first time we take over operations and maintenance of an operating wind farm [that] we haven't constructed ourselves," said Senior Vice President Jens Jakobsson.

Vestas prepares to launch 26-MW project in South Korea
Vestas is on track to begin commissioning turbines at a 26-megawatt wind farm in South Korea by the end of January, according to the company. It added that the project would feature 13 of its V100 2-MW turbines.

The administration of New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo has awarded a total of $360 million to 11 land-based renewable energy projects, including two wind farms. The projects will have a combined capacity of 260 megawatts.

Lawmakers in N.C. urge Trump to stop Amazon East project
North Carolina state legislators have written a letter to the incoming administration of President-elect Donald Trump calling for a last-minute halt to Avangrid Renewables' Amazon Wind Farm US East project as it readies for commercial operations in the coming weeks. "Specifically at this site, we reduced the size of the project, arranged specific turbines differently, ran extensive modeling in conjunction with their scientists, and will continue to share operating data once we reach full commercial operation," said Avangrid Renewables spokesman Paul Copleman.

Wind power employs just over 100,000 Americans according to new data released today by the Department of Energy, more than work at nuclear, natural gas, coal or hydroelectric power plants.
