Ohio wind industry poised for takeoff, AWEA says
Ohio's wind industry has been relatively stagnant in recent years but is expected to see a period of growth in the near future as the 207 megawatts of installed wind capacity it has under construction begins to come online, according to the American Wind Energy Association. AWEA Eastern Region Policy Director Andrew Gohn attributed the state's lack of deployment to a variety of "unique challenges," such as unstable policies.

Block Island signals start US offshore wind industry, says Kiernan
The launch of Deepwater Wind's Block Island offshore wind farm off the coast of Rhode Island "is far more than just a ribbon-cutting -- it is the dawn of an entirely new source of US energy," said American Wind Energy Association CEO Tom Kiernan at AWEA Offshore WINDPOWER 2016. "Worldwide, leaders are sensing and seeing the opportunity here in the US," he added.

Gov. Branstad: Wind could provide 40% of Iowa's electricity in 5 years
Iowa is on track to source 40% of its total electricity from wind within the next five years, Gov. Terry Branstad said. The American Wind Energy Association said the state, which has the second greatest installed wind capacity in the country, sourced 35% of its total electricity from wind between August 2015 and July 2016.

Developers in North Dakota and Minnesota are rushing to secure approval for new projects before the end of the year so that they can qualify for 100% of the wind energy Production Tax Credit, according to this analysis. Observers say Xcel Energy, which has four wind farms under development between the two states, is an example of this trend.

Policy Watch
Opinion: Policy uncertainty deters investment in Ohio's renewables
Uncertain policies make Ohio an unattractive place for renewable energy firms to do business and are driving potential investments to neighboring states, write Doug Herr, vice president for sales and marketing of AeroTorque, and John Colm, president and executive director of WIRE-Net. "Our state already has a great base of renewable manufacturers, but by fixing our policies and providing long-term policy stability, we can ensure that these businesses will continue to grow locally and potentially attract others as well," they write.

Several wind firms sue Mo. regulators for barring wind development
Osborn Wind Energy, Osborn Wind II, Boulevard Associates and NextEra Energy Resources have filed a lawsuit against the Clinton County Commission and the Clinton County Planning and Zoning Commission in Missouri. The companies argue that state officials have "exhibited bias and prejudice against wind energy projects and plaintiffs' efforts to develop a wind energy project, and colluded with individuals that opposed wind energy projects."

American wind power reaches lofty milestones
With the first three quarters of 2016 now in the books, it's time to pause and take stock of where things stand. Here's what we see: a homegrown industry achieving milestones that seemed far-fetched just a few years ago. The biggest news so far this year is that Iowa has set yet another wind power record: it generated over 35% of its electricity using wind from August 2015 through August 2016. Read more.
