Iowa generated 35% of its total electricity from wind over the past 12 months and has become a national success story in terms of the benefits it receives from wind development, writes American Wind Energy Association CEO Tom Kiernan. The US has 20.3 gigawatts of new wind capacity under various stages of development, according to the American Wind Energy Association. "This enormous growth reflects what we hear from states, utilities and Fortune 500 companies all the time -- wind power is increasingly their first choice for energy," said CEO Tom Kiernan.

BOEM plans N.Y. offshore wind leasing round for Dec. 15
The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management will hold an offshore wind leasing round for a 79,350-acre tract of space off the coast of New York state on Dec. 15, according to the Interior Department. BOEM said it has prequalified 14 companies to participate in the bidding process.

Falck begins operations at 25-MW project in Scotland
Falck Renewables has begun generating power at a 25-megawatt wind farm in Ayrshire, Scotland, bringing its total installed wind capacity in the nation to 307 MW, according to the company. The company said it hopes to increase the number to 413 MW during the first quarter of 2017.

Vestas secures new DNV GL certification for V100 model
Vestas has secured the first certification for its V100 2-megawatt mark 10 version turbine under a new system that is administered by the International Electrotechnical Committee for Renewable Energy and issued by DNV GL, it said on Thursday. "What is unique about the IECRE system is that end-users, mainly our customers, together with equipment manufacturers and other stakeholders have substantially contributed to defining the new standards against which wind turbines are evaluated," said Vestas Chief Technology Officer and Executive Vice President Anders Vedel.

Whirlpool begins erecting turbine at Ohio manufacturing site
Whirlpool has begun installing a single turbine at its manufacturing facility in Ottawa, Ohio, according to the company. Earlier this year, Whirlpool said it also intends to install a total of five turbines between two other manufacturing plants in the state.
