This industry has always wrapped itself in the mantle of green power and has sought to use the environmental benefits of wind power as an excuse for not doing anything about the environmental harms it causes. —Rick Wiebe, Calif.

Palmyra Township voters reject wind turbine ordinance
PALMYRA TWP., Mich. — Voters in Palmyra Township on Tuesday rejected the wind turbine ordinance that was approved by the township board in October. The vote in Tuesday's referendum was 259 "no" to 217 "yes." Township Supervisor Jim Isley said the relative closeness of the vote showed him the township board wasn't far off in its deliberations on the ordinance. He said many of the votes on both the planning commission and the township board were split and the vote . . . Complete story »

Turbines take center stage: Selectmen vote to shut them down for half a day
More than a month has gone by since Town Meeting passed two dueling articles, one to turn turbines off until November and another to allow selectmen to pursue an approach toward building consensus on what to do with the machines. Since then selectmen have not discussed the turbines in public session, but that changed last night when they announced a plan to meet "abutters half-way," in Chairman Mary (Pat) Flynn's words. That plan calls for the two turbines at the . . . Complete story »

Mayor against more wind turbines in Shellharbour
Three gleaming wind turbines on the roof of the new Stockland Shellharbour shopping centre aren't enough to change Shellharbour Mayor Kellie Marsh's mind on a council policy which is against having more of them. The city's Liberal councillors were left in a spin in February when they found out about the turbines, which are now clearly visible above the new shopping centre car park. Just one week earlier, Cr Marsh had used her casting vote at a fiery council meeting . . . Complete story »

Minority political parties form coalition to rule Highland Council
Senior independent councillor Isobel McCallum warned that the new combination of SNP, Lib Dems and Labour would open the doors to a flood of windfarms. She said: "It's an SNP dictatorship and a mandate for wind turbines to dominate the Highlands and I think that's what will happen. Complete story »

Levington: Row between village and executive couple over wind turbines
Villagers are furious today over proposals by a well-known couple to build unsightly wind turbines in a beautiful riverside valley at their country home. Dame Marjorie Scardino, the chief executive of Pearson PLC, and her Pulitzer prize-winning journalist husband Albert, want to put the two turbines in place at Levington Hall to generate green electricity. Last night Mr Scardino said they understood villagers' worries and would attempt to mitigate the impact of the turbines through an extensive programme of reforestation, . . . Complete story »

The 76 turbine Pen y Cymoedd Wind Energy Project was today granted development consent by Charles Hendry MP, Energy Minister at the Department of Energy and Climate Change. The wind farm is likely to cost £300 million, take three years to build and last for around 25 years with the potential retention or creation of around 300 jobs in Wales. Obama presses Congress to extend energy tax incentives
President Obama is urging Congress to extend tax breaks for wind power projects that are slated to expire at year's end and expand stimulus-law tax incentives for manufacturing green energy components. The energy credits are among a wider jobs "to do" list — which even comes with its own logo — that Obama will call on Congress to act upon at an appearance in upstate New York later Tuesday. "Congress needs to help put America in control of its energy . . . Complete story »

Board of Health to take public testimony on health impacts of wind turbines
The Falmouth Board of Health decided on the spur of the moment last night to hold an emergency hearing about the health effects of the wind turbines later this month, which could result in shutting down the three large turbines in town until there is more evidence about these effects. Board members were told that one person who lives near the turbines attempted suicide and heard testimony that residents are moving out of their homes, which led to the decision . . . Kingston's blades won't stop; Cease and desist declined
KINGSTON — Building Commmissioner Paul Armstrong has concluded that the Planning Board's site plan approvals and subsequent building permits for the wind turbine Independence and three wind turbines on business owner Mary O'Donnell's Marion Drive property are valid, despite claims to the contrary. With Armstrong's decision, attorney Christopher Senie, who represents 11 Kingston families hoping to prevent operation of the Independence and stop operation of O'Donnell's turbines, said his clients are deciding whether they will appeal Armstrong's decision to the . . . Wind farm appeal bound for court
The appeal against the Flat Hill Wind Farm looks set for the Environment Court but no hearing date has been confirmed. An Invercargill City Council commission granted consent for the eight-turbine wind farm after a two-day hearing in February, but the decision has been appealed on the grounds the cultural heritage of the area has not been respected. The appellants also claim the development does not fit into the district plan and failed to consider the adverse effects on residents. . . . Complete story »

Origin Energy resurrects its Ballarat wind farm
Origin Energy has put what would be Australia's biggest wind farm, a $1 billion project at Stockyard Hill, Ballarat, back on the agenda but is searching for other parties to build and own it. Last week, chief executive Grant King said Origin was advancing development of Stockyard Hill, which had been on the backburner since last year because of a glut of renewable energy certificates that made wind farm development uneconomic. In response to a Dow Jones Newswires story yesterday . . . Complete story »

We're headed to highest hydro rates
As the cost of electricity climbs because of green energy schemes, people continue to fight the conga-line of industrial wind turbines snaking around rural Ontario. Locally, opponents to the Next Era Summerhaven Wind project in Haldimand County are pursuing a legal challenge. Haldimand Wind Concerns and Bill Monture of Six Nations have appealed the Ministry of the Environment (MOE) approval of the wind project leading to preliminary hearings last week. Hearings are tentatively scheduled later this month in Hagersville with . . . Complete story »

Carkettle residents 'surrounded' by turbines oppose new plans
Residents who say they are "under siege" from wind turbine applications are opposing plans to build two more near their homes. Householders in Carkettle, a small six-property cul-de-sac hamlet north of Marton, say the proposed developments would ruin some of the best views in Furness and add to the feeling they are being surrounded by turbines. The first application, for a 34.2 metre high turbine on farmland at the top of the hamlet, has been submitted by Lindal farmer Sam . . . Complete story »

HEAT tells St. Columban community not to give up
Now is not the time to give up. That's the message Huron East Against Turbines (HEAT) brought to a half-empty Knights of Columbus Hall in St. Columban last Thursday, May 3 when organizers presented their financial statement and offered to help local landowners present their concerns about the proposed 15-turbine St. Columban Energy LP wind development.
. . Plans for Chesapeake Bay wind turbine suspended
A towering offshore wind turbine off the Eastern Shore seemed likely as recently as late March, when the state gave its blessing for a prototype energy spire in the Chesapeake Bay. Barely one month later, those plans have been blown away. Gamesa Energy USA and its partner on the project, Huntington Ingalls' Newport News Shipbuilding, announced Monday the suspension of work to erect a 479-foot-tall turbine near Cape Charles. They cited concerns over federal energy policy and the possible expiration . . . Complete story »
