Taking Care of Business

By Joel Makower

Of all of the conferences that my GreenBiz team has produced in the past few years, I couldn't be more excited about our upcoming GreenBiz Innovation Forum, October 19-20 in San Francisco. And now that Labor Day is behind us and the forum draws near, you'll be hearing a lot more from me about what will take place during those two days.

This will not your usual conference, for several reasons. First and foremost is the topic: The intersection of sustainability and innovation. Both terms are bandied about indiscriminately these days by companies and consultants. And both are broad, vague terms whose meaning lies, as much as anything, in the eye of the beholder. Yet both are increasingly essential to business success.

At the Forum, we'll dive deep into this topic, exploring how innovation happens inside mainstream companies, and how companies are aligning their innovation and sustainability strategies and goals. We'll look at the barriers and enablers to sustainability innovation and hear from those who are leading the way.

What else makes this event different? There's the format, which is not your usual "sage on stage" endless parade of speakers and panelists. There'll be some, of course, but there will also be many inspirational and fun hands-on experiences that demonstrate firsthand the secrets to innovation. ("Marshmallow Challenge," anyone?) And there will be ample opportunities to learn from your peers -- not merely during networking breaks, but in interactive peer-to-peer sessions at which you will brainstorm and problem-solve with others.

We've also made this event invitation-only, to assure the highest quality audience of corporate practitioners. (We promise you won't be overrun by consultants.)

We've just updated the agenda to reflect the latest additions to the sessions and speakers -- experts and practitioners from the worlds of both sustainability and innovation. Please check it out. If you'd like to attend, I encourage you to request an invitation now, as this event is certain to sell out.

Follow the Leaders: Our friend Bill McDonough weighs in this week with a top-10 list, part of our 10-year anniversary. Bill offers "10 Things I've Learned from Leaders in Sustainability." His insights are always worth a read. Meanwhile, our own Matthew Wheeland dives into "10 Companies Setting Big Goals for Water Efficiency."

"How to Drive Business Value from Product and REACH Compliance": That's the title of an upcoming webcast, September 14, moderated by GreenBiz.com senior writer Marc Gunther. It focuses on how companies can work with their supply chains to collect, track and analyze the vast amount of data needed to comply with rapidly expanding regulations, including Europe's REACH and RoHS laws. You can register for this free event here.

Last Call for Comments: The 45-day period for commenting on ULE 880 -- Sustainability for Manufacturing Organizations is coming to a close -- September 14 is the final day. If you've already registered (nearly 700 organizations have done so), please submit your comments by the deadline. Commenting is open to all; learn more and register here.
