Wind Energy and the Power System: An Interactive FAQ

Free Educational Webinar
Thursday, January 28, 2010
3:00 PM - 4:30 PM EDT

As wind energy continues to grow as a major source of clean, domestic energy, a number of questions have surfaced about how wind power is integrated with the electric power system, in part because of the complex nature of the topic. An immense body of technical work has been conducted on wind integration over the last decade, comprised of dozens of peer-reviewed studies as well as tens of thousands of hours of real world experience operating power systems with large amounts of wind energy in the U.S. and Europe.

Some of the leading experts in the field recently teamed up to distill the lessons that have been learned from this work into a concise and readily accessible format. This interactive webinar will discuss some of the most common questions and misconceptions about wind energy, including:

- How do grid operators deal with the changing output of wind generation?

- How can we change the way we operate the power system to better accommodate wind?

- Does wind need energy storage?

- Can you predict the wind?

- How much does it cost to integrate wind with the power system?

- Does wind power need new transmission, and how much does that cost?

- Does wind power need backup generation, and does that affect the fuel use and emissions savings of wind?

- Does wind provide capacity to meet power demand?

- What happens when the wind stops blowing?

- How much wind can be accommodated on the power system?

- How does wind compare to other sources of electricity, like coal or nuclear?

- Any other questions you bring to the webinar (time permitting)

This webinar is designed to be accessible to people from all backgrounds, and is ideal for members of the media, policymakers, regulators, utility and electric industry professionals, and the general public.

Dr. Michael Milligan, a wind integration expert at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory who has authored more than 100 publications, including this recent article in IEEE’s Power and Energy magazine, will lead the discussion of this fascinating topic. This webinar is being presented by some of the leading technical organizations working on wind integration issues, including the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, the U.S. Department of Energy, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, the Utility Wind Integration Group, and the American Wind Energy Association. The webinar is expected to last 60-90 minutes.

Why Participate In AWEA Events?

As the national trade association for the wind industry, the American Wind Energy Association (AWEA) strives to create and deliver educational events that capture the energy of the rapidly expanding wind market and offer necessary opportunities for organizations to learn and network with fellow wind professionals. The revenue generated from AWEA events is used to advance the wind industry through policy analysis and promotion, to ensure wind industry interests are addressed in renewable energy legislation, to communicate the benefits of wind energy to all. ONLY AWEA puts your dollars to work advancing the wind energy industry.
