Emerald City

Small Changes Add Up
If 10,000 Chicago Biters buy 1 pound of organic fair-trade cocoa instead of the regular stuff, farmers will make $1,500 more toward a living wage on those beans.

Cocktail Tidbit
According to The Wizard of Oz film lore, designers used Jell-O crystals to color the horses in Emerald City; their scenes were shot quickly, before the horses could lick it off.

Off to see the wizard? Follow the yellow brick road to Navy Pier this weekend for the Chicago Green Festival and a chance to meet the peeps behind the city’s green curtains. Skip like Dorothy (or maybe just stroll) through more than 300 eco-friendly exhibits, 150 speakers, a film festival, a farmers market, yoga classes, live music, and good eats. Remodeling? Rack up ideas at the green homes pavilion. Ready to lose the ick in lipstick? Study up with safe cosmetics guru Stacy Malkan. Or get David Bach’s (Go Green, Live Rich) take on saving money with eco living. We’ll be checking out Ella Vickers’s repurposed sail-cloth totes (with a pit stop at the fair-trade tent for some chocolate, natch). All that plus free bike valet? Oh my.
