Taking Care of Business

It doesn't take an idealistic MBA to guess that companies could make a big difference in the world if their business goals aligned with those of sustainable-development NGOs. But as any hard-driving CEO would tell you, it's always better to hear it from the players themselves. Last week the World Economic Forum released a survey of 40 major companies, offering a much-needed business perspective on development issues. The upshot? Corporate bigwigs have found that by partnering with NGOs they can overcome social challenges and create new markets for their products -- without sacrificing current profits.

Also this week: Packaging giant Tetra Pak finds new uses for its carton-board waste.
