Act Now to Stop Rollbacks of Overfishing Protections
One quarter of commercial fish in U.S. waters are overfished or in danger of being overfished. Populations of tuna, cod, skate and grouper are much smaller than decades ago. But the Bush Administration has proposed weakening standards that protect fisheries from overfishing - standards that are starting to help some fish make a comeback. With the seafood industry generating over 250,000 jobs and contributing billions to our nation's economy, healthy fisheries mean a healthy economy. Take action! Tell the U.S. government's lead fisheries official keep overfishing protections.

Activists at Work - Updates and Victories

Dirty Secrets Behind the Misnamed "Clear Skies" Bill
Over 30,000 Environmental Defense activists have spoken out against the misnamed "Clear Skies" bill - an unprecedented rollback to our nation's clean air laws. Reintroduced by Senator James Inhofe (R-OK), the bill would make lasting, damaging changes to the Clean Air Act. A Senate Committee will consider "Clear Skies" next week - tell your senators and President Bush to support healthier air, not a smokescreen. Already have? Spread the word!

Honda, Nissan & Others Seek to Join Suit Against California's Global Warming Law
Honda, Nissan, Hyundai and other international car companies are looking to join in putting the brakes on global warming progress. They recently asked the court to include them in the automaker lawsuit against California, seeking to block the state's landmark law to cut global warming pollution from new cars sold in the state. The automakers are choosing to litigate, not innovate. Over 21,500 Environmental Defense activists have sent letters to the original nine car companies, including General Motors, Ford, DaimlerChrysler, Toyota. It's not too late to send your message! Seafood Selector Tip of the Month - What to Choose Instead of Chilean Seabass
Chilean seabass is drastically overfished and often illegally caught. For a less expensive alternative, consider sablefish, which is exceptionally rich and flavorful, high in omega-3 fatty acids and low in contaminants. To help preserve our oceans, choose sablefish as it comes from well managed fisheries with little bycatch. Learn about other healthy and environmentally friendly seafood choices.
